LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jake Reiner, the eldest son of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner, expressed his profound grief following the tragic deaths of his parents. In a heartfelt post on Substack, Jake described the harrowing experience of losing both parents on December 14, when they were stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home, a place he had known throughout his childhood. This marks Jake's first detailed public reflection on the tragedy, as he had previously shared only brief statements alongside his sister.

Jake conveyed the indescribable pain of losing both parents simultaneously, stating, “Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time. It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare.” His post, while emotionally charged, also notably touches on the difficult reality of his younger brother Nick Reiner being charged with their parents' murders, although he refrains from mentioning Nick by name.

Reflecting on the dual loss, Jake remarked, “Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it.” Even amidst his grief, he described the enduring love that his parents had for him, his brother, and his sister, asserting, “the love they have for me, my brother, and my sister is truly unconditional.” Jake recounted receiving the devastating news while attending a memorial service for a friend, revealing, “I received a call from my sister Romy telling me our father was dead. Minutes later, she called back telling me our mother was also dead.”

With a heavy heart, Jake articulated how much his parents were “robbed of so many things that day” and conveyed his anger and sorrow at the sense of loss. He vividly recalled the fear they must have experienced in their final moments. Despite his sorrow, Jake’s writing often shifts to fond memories, highlighting the authentic nature of his father, Rob, both in public and at home. He recounted how their shared passion for baseball, particularly their love for the Los Angeles Dodgers, forged a strong connection between them, reminiscing, “We loved the Dodgers more than anything. We went to so many damn games.”

Jake characterized his mother, Michele, as “the engine, the backbone, and the heart of our entire family,” noting her pivotal role in ensuring the family remained close. He humorously added that his mother often felt underappreciated for her comedic contributions, writing, “My mom was really funny and constantly complained about how nobody in the family thought she was.” The couple shared three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy, while Rob also had a daughter, Tracy, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.

As the legal proceedings develop, Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, with a pretrial hearing scheduled for Wednesday. Authorities have not disclosed details regarding potential motives behind the deaths, keeping much of the information about the case under wraps. Rob Reiner, known for his iconic films from the 1980s and ’90s such as “This is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “A Few Good Men,” and “When Harry Met Sally,” received tributes during this year’s Oscars, spotlighting his remarkable career and legacy. Jake mentioned that Romy, who was first to arrive at the scene of the killings, would share her story when the time is appropriate.
