Death is not looming for the "Final Destination" franchise at the box office, as its sixth installment, “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” drew significant crowds to theaters this weekend. The film topped the domestic box office charts by grossing an estimated $51 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The movie also performed well internationally, matching its domestic earnings and totaling a remarkable $102 million in its global debut.

In stark contrast, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye's experimental thriller, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” did not receive a similar enthusiastic welcome. Opening outside of the top five at an estimated $3.3 million, it struggled to compete against the overwhelming buzz surrounding “Final Destination: Bloodlines.” Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore, stated, “It was always going to have a tough time coming up against ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines.’ There was a lot of buzz.”

“Final Destination: Bloodlines” premiered in 3,523 locations and benefitted from strong reviews, achieving a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Innovative viral marketing tactics, including a photo of logs on the back of trucks—a nod to one of the franchise's most notorious death traps—also contributed to the film’s success.

This installment marks a significant resurgence for the nearly 25-year-old franchise, which has not seen a new release since 2011. The film's success adds to a streak of hits for Warner Bros., which has previously released “Ryan Coogler’s Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie,” both of which ranked within the top five this weekend. Disney’s “Thunderbolts” came in second place with $16.5 million, bringing its global total to over $325 million, while “Sinners” finished third with $15.4 million, bringing its global total to $316.8 million. “A Minecraft Movie” added $5.9 million to its staggering global earnings of $928.6 million.

“Hurry Up Tomorrow” entered the box office scene in sixth place, with Tesfaye co-writing the film and Trey Edward Shults serving as director. The narrative follows a fictionalized version of Tesfaye himself grappling with insomnia as a musician, featuring co-stars Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. However, the film received largely negative reviews, holding a mere 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning a C- CinemaScore. Maria Sherman from the Associated Press described it as “an exciting vanity project with surrealist imagination but stiff writing, no stakes, limited emotional weight, and an unclear narrative.”

Lionsgate was responsible for the release of the R-rated film, which opened on over 2,000 screens. Despite its modest earnings, its performance is deemed profitable for the studio.

Looking ahead, next weekend is poised to be significant for movie theaters, with the releases of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and the live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch,” both gearing up for nationwide releases. The overall domestic box office remains robust, showing an increase of nearly 15% from the previous year. Dergarabedian remarked, “This weekend is the perfect opening act for what could be one of the biggest Memorial weekends at the box office ever.”

As a summary of this weekend's box office performance, the top 10 films are as follows:

1. “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” $51 million.
