SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - On Tuesday, over 17,000 residents found themselves under evacuation orders in Southern California as the rapidly spreading Sandy Fire posed a significant threat to suburban homes. The fire ignited on Monday in the hills above Simi Valley, located approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles. By Tuesday morning, the flames engulfed more than two square miles (five square kilometers) of dry brush and had resulted in the destruction of at least one home, according to reports from the Ventura County Fire Department.

The Sandy Fire initially surged due to gusty winds exceeding 30 mph (48 kph). However, firefighter efforts were bolstered by a decrease in wind activity overnight, as reported by fire department spokesperson Andrew Dowd. “We’ve made a lot of progress against this fire with those improved weather conditions,” said Dowd. Fire crews aimed to make additional headway before wind speeds were expected to rise again.

As of Tuesday morning, the fire was only 5% contained and the cause remains under investigation. Evacuation orders and warnings persist for various neighborhoods in Simi Valley, a city with more than 125,000 inhabitants that has been enveloped in thick smoke as aerial firefighting units conducted water drops.

In a related incident, firefighters are also combating a substantial 23-square-mile (59-square-kilometer) blaze on Santa Rosa Island, a location off the Southern California coast. This fire has already destroyed a cabin and an equipment shed while also necessitating the evacuation of 11 employees from the National Park Service. As of Tuesday morning, this blaze had not yet reached containment.

Santa Rosa Island is renowned as a popular destination for camping and hiking, serving as a habitat for native wildlife, including island foxes, spotted skunks, and elephant seals. As the firefighting efforts continued, the region faced a dual challenge with both the Sandy Fire threatening urban areas and the blaze on Santa Rosa Island posing risks to natural and human resources alike.
