LONDON (AP) — Police in the UK are currently investigating two allegations of historical child sex abuse linked to documentation from the U.S. Justice Department's investigation into the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The allegations stem from two separate incidents reported by the Surrey police, which operates in the county immediately southwest of London.
The allegations pertain to events that took place in different time frames and locations. One allegation involves incidents from the mid-1990s to 2000, encompassing areas in Surrey and Berkshire. The second allegation references occurrences during the mid- to late 1980s in West Surrey. At this stage in the investigation, no arrests have been made.
In a public statement, Surrey police affirmed their commitment to taking all reports of sexual offending seriously. The police noted that they would explore reasonable lines of inquiry to verify the information and establish corroborating evidence surrounding the allegations made. This statement underscores the seriousness with which the police approach such matters.
Surrey is among several police forces that have collaborated to address potential crimes revealed in documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. The National Police Chiefs' Council announced in February that it had convened a national coordination group to assist various forces in examining the more than 3 million pages of documents made available earlier this year, which provide insight into Epstein’s extensive connections and potential criminal activities.
While the council has not disclosed specific police forces involved in the initiative, at least eight have acknowledged that they are currently “assessing” information found in the released files. This investigation covers a range of issues, including concerns regarding the possible use of Epstein's private jet in sex trafficking operations and allegations that former Prince Andrew sent confidential reports to Epstein during his tenure as Britain’s international trade envoy.
