Lively, Baldoni Legal Battle Continues Post-Settlement

NEW YORK (AP) – The legal controversies surrounding actors Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni continue to unfold, despite a recent settlement reached between the two. Just a month ago, Lively and Baldoni announced a resolution that spared them from going to trial regarding Lively's allegations of sexual harassment made against Baldoni during the filming of their 2024 movie "It Ends With Us."

However, on Monday, Lively's legal team returned to court seeking further compensation from Baldoni. They have requested a judge to order Baldoni to cover Lively's legal expenses and additional penalties. Lively's lawyers argue that under California law, she is entitled to this compensation because Baldoni's countersuit—which alleged defamation and extortion on Lively’s part—was dismissed by a judge last year.

Neither actor was present during the hearing conducted by U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman in New York. Baldoni’s attorney, Ellyn Garofalo, accused Lively of attempting to circumvent the settled agreement by effectively reopening the case. She emphasized that the settlement, the financial details of which were not disclosed, concluded without Baldoni or his production company incurring any of the $300 million in damages Lively initially demanded.

Garofalo argued that revisiting the case would entail a burdensome process that could require new evidence and expert testimonies, characterizing Lively's actions as an attempt to initiate an alternative trial. Contrastingly, Lively's attorney, Michael Gottlieb, contended that Baldoni's countersuit constituted the kind of legal backlash that California legislation aimed to prevent. This law seeks to protect survivors of sexual harassment from prolonged and detrimental legal disputes.

Judge Liman did not deliver an immediate ruling following over an hour of arguments from both sides. The actors have faced off in court since late 2024 regarding tensions that arose during the filming of "It Ends With Us." Lively's accusations against Baldoni include claims that he made inappropriate comments about her appearance, crossed physical boundaries while filming a love scene, and pressured her into sharing nudity during a childbirth scene against her wishes. Furthermore, she accused Baldoni and his production company of trying to damage her public reputation to discredit her complaints.

Baldoni has denied the allegations of harassment and the alleged smear campaign, asserting that Lively fabricated her claims as a means to gain creative control over the film. He filed a countersuit against Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, accusing them of defamation and extortion. The case took a pivotal turn when the judge dismissed Lively's sexual harassment claims on the grounds that she was classified as an independent contractor rather than an employee on the film set, which complicated her legal standing under federal law. Although Lively's retaliation claim was approaching trial, the parties eventually settled before it could proceed.

Following the resolution of the legal battle, both sides issued a joint statement acknowledging the validity of Lively's concerns and reiterating their commitment to maintaining workplaces free of harassment and inappropriate behaviors.

The film "It Ends With Us," based on Colleen Hoover's acclaimed 2016 novel detailing a relationship characterized by domestic violence, premiered in August 2024 and surpassed box office expectations. Blake Lively is well-known for her roles in the 2005 film "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and the television series "Gossip Girl," which ran from 2007 to 2012, among other notable projects. Justin Baldoni gained recognition from his lead role in the television comedy "Jane the Virgin," has directed various films including "Five Feet Apart," and authored the book "Man Enough," challenging conventional perceptions of masculinity.
