Fire crews in Brampton are actively battling a "very stubborn" fire that broke out at a commercial property near the intersection of Intermodal and Goreway Drives. Deputy Chief Michael Waite reported that the situation remains challenging for firefighters as they work to bring the blaze under control.
The Peel Regional Police have confirmed that the fire is generating heavy smoke that is drifting onto nearby roadways, leading to delays for motorists in the area. While the smoke is not impacting visibility significantly, it has caused some drivers to slow down and "rubberneck" as they pass by the scene.
At the peak of the firefighting efforts, 11 fire trucks were deployed to the scene, and operations are still ongoing. Firefighters are utilizing a drone to identify specific areas of concern, although it appears that the majority of the flames are concentrated in the center of the affected building.
Deputy Chief Waite indicated that while the primary material involved in the fire is scrap metal, a variety of other materials are also present. Due to the potentially hazardous nature of the smoke and materials, the Ministry of Environment has been notified as a precautionary measure.
Brampton Fire Services anticipates being at the scene for an extended duration, and residents in the vicinity are advised to keep their windows closed to prevent smoke inhalation. Currently, no injuries have been reported as a result of the fire, and authorities will continue to manage the situation closely.
