WASHINGTON (AP) – The controversy surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool intensified as President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that six individuals had been arrested in connection with damage to the site. The troubled $14 million rehabilitation project has become a significant point of contention, highlighting issues related to law enforcement, aesthetics, and environmental concerns as the nation prepares for its 250th anniversary celebrations.
In a social media statement, Trump claimed, without providing supporting evidence, that there was a “350-foot gash” in the paint of the Reflecting Pool. He emphasized the urgency to rectify the “botched renovation” before the anniversary celebrations scheduled for next week, asserting that the federal government would release images to support his allegations. Trump’s promise to enhance the aesthetics of the century-old pool included draining its water and painting the bottom a color he categorized as “American flag blue.” However, since the restoration, the pool has been afflicted by algae blooms, and pieces of the new coating have been observed peeling off.
Trump has, without substantiation, repeatedly attributed the peeling paint to alleged vandalism. He remarked on Tuesday, “It was purposefully and criminally done, and somebody had to work very hard, probably in the dark of night, to create such a condition.” In addition to the six arrests, he noted that another seven individuals received citations for purportedly damaging the pool. The U.S. Park Police and the Interior Department could not be reached for immediate comment regarding these arrests or Trump’s claims of vandalism.
A maintenance issue has now escalated into a law enforcement concern, as National Guard members along with Park Police patrol the deck surrounding the Reflecting Pool. Following Trump’s assertions over the weekend regarding the damage, crews were observed erecting fencing near the area. An Interior Department representative indicated that the fencing was scheduled to be installed ahead of the Fourth of July celebrations, highlighting that one of the launch pads for the fireworks is in proximity to the pool. The representative, Katie Martin, claimed the early installation was necessary due to an increase in vandalism attributed to “leftist activists,” although no evidence was provided to support this assertion.
Amidst these developments, Trump stated that the Interior Department would soon release photographs of the alleged vandalism. When questioned by reporters upon arriving in Pennsylvania, Trump insisted that the images, which remain unverified, would be forthcoming.
The arrests reflect heightened security expectations in Washington leading up to and during the 250th anniversary celebrations, expected to attract significant crowds to the National Mall and surrounding tourist locations. Trump mentioned plans to drain “some of the water” from the Reflecting Pool for permanent repairs either just before or after the Fourth of July, although the specifics regarding the scale, scope, or cost of these repairs remain unclear.
Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a contractor involved in the pool project, acknowledged that certain areas of the Reflecting Pool require repairs but stated these areas are minor compared to the overall seven-acre project and do not indicate a failure of the liner. They expect to conduct the necessary repairs once the pool is drained, as part of the warranty obligations.
Compounding the situation, an environmental group has urged the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to investigate after a dead Mallard duckling was found floating in the algae-infested pool, with two additional deceased ducks discovered nearby. The Center for Biological Diversity criticized the funds spent on transforming the Reflecting Pool into what they termed a “giant duck death trap” in time for America’s 250th birthday celebrations. City Wildlife, a Washington-based organization specializing in rescue and rehabilitation, stated they could not determine the cause of the duckling's death since the carcass wasn’t retrieved for examination.
The renovation project, initially promoted by Trump as an effort to beautify and clean up the Reflecting Pool, has faced significant challenges. Despite his assurances, the newly installed coating, which was selected personally by Trump, quickly became marred by vivid green algae blooms shortly after completion. Observations noted pieces of the liner adrift in the water, prompting workers to apply hydrogen peroxide to combat the algae, a substance known to potentially strip paint.
Experts have indicated that the dark coating may contribute to heightened algae growth by absorbing more sunlight, which raises the water temperature and fosters a favorable environment for algae proliferation. The situation surrounding the Reflecting Pool continues to evolve with increasing public scrutiny and concern as America approaches a monumental anniversary.
