Tragedy has struck the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the untimely death of Saskatchewan Roughriders linebacker and team captain Jayden Dalke, who was killed in a car accident on Saturday evening. The team confirmed this heartbreaking news on Sunday. Dalke was just 30 years old and hailed from Leduc, Alberta. He had been a member of the Roughriders since being selected as a sixth-round pick in the 2022 CFL Draft.
In a statement released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the team expressed profound sadness over Dalke's passing. They described him as a "relentless warrior on the field," whose determination, toughness, and work ethic served as an inspiration to his teammates. The statement highlighted the deep affection the players had for Dalke and how they are heartbroken by his loss. They also noted Dalke's unique ability to make those around him feel special and valued, stating, "No one ever left a conversation with him without a smile." Dalke had recently returned to the game's lineup after recovering from an upper-body injury, participating in the Roughriders' last game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He was recognized for his contributions in Week 7, earning a spot on the CFL's honour roll following his impressive performance in special teams. Over the course of his career, Dalke played a total of 68 games in the CFL, which included all 18 regular-season games and two postseason games in 2022, a season in which he helped the Roughriders clinch the Grey Cup.
Before joining the CFL, Dalke played U Sports football at the University of Alberta. He garnered significant recognition for his performance in collegiate football, receiving a first-team All-Canadian designation in 2019 and a second-team All-Canadian honor in 2021.
In light of the tragedy, the Roughriders canceled their practice on Sunday but are scheduled to resume activities on Monday, preparing for their upcoming game against the Edmonton Elks on Thursday. CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston also shared his condolences, expressing tremendous sorrow over Dalke's passing. He highlighted Dalke's passion for football and his exceptional leadership both on and off the field, noting that Jayden will be remembered for his dedication to the community. Johnston emphasized that the CFL has lost not only a talented player but also a friend and brother to many within the football family.
