The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have released limited details about the incident. However, they have confirmed that the young girl managed to return home safely, and the identity of the suspect remains unknown.
The police have provided a photo of the suspect, who can be seen standing on a street at night dressed in a full Cat in the Hat ensemble, which includes the character's iconic red-and-white striped hat. This particular incident has been labeled as a “concerning prank” by the RCMP. While donning a costume itself is not a criminal act, the police have indicated that following someone in a manner that incites fear for their safety could potentially qualify as criminal harassment.
For context, the Cat in the Hat is a well-known fictional character created by Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, first introduced in the eponymous book published in 1957. The character's popularity has been solidified through various adaptations, including a live-action movie released in 2003 featuring Canadian actor Mike Myers.

Cpl. Devon Gerrits emphasized the seriousness of the situation in a statement issued on Tuesday, stating, “Regardless of whether the individual intended the behavior as a joke, following a young person and causing them to fear for their safety is extremely concerning.”
