VIA Rail has reversed its decision to discontinue services at the Guildwood station in Scarborough, Ontario. The company announced in a statement on its website that it would continue its operations in line with its winter schedule beyond October 25. While the company intends to assess community feedback regarding its future plans, it has committed to keeping operations at Guildwood Station active for the time being.
In the statement, VIA Rail highlighted its recognition of the significance of reliable rail transportation in connecting communities across Canada, particularly in Scarborough. The company pledged to engage with local community leaders to discuss the situation and gather feedback, reinforcing its commitment to serve passengers effectively.
This decision comes after a group of Scarborough Members of Parliament (MPs) urged VIA Rail to change its course, expressing concerns about the lack of transparency during the process. MP Salma Zahid, along with her colleagues Doly Begum, Michael Coteau, and Jean Yip, criticized the prior decision, stating it failed to reflect the reality of Guildwood Station's usage, which caters to tens of thousands of passenger trips annually.
The MPs articulated their frustration, asserting that the altered travel routes would complicate access for many passengers who relied on Guildwood Station. They called for a meeting with VIA Rail's interim president and CEO Mathieu Paquette to further address the issues surrounding the service changes, emphasizing the need for public consultation before making such significant decisions.
Earlier, VIA Rail had cited improved travel times as the rationale behind its initial decision to cease operations at Guildwood and Malton stations. However, local passengers expressed that this change would lead to greater inconvenience, forcing them to travel to Union Station or Oshawa to connect with rail services. Scarborough-Guildwood Councillor Paul Ainslie expressed his dissatisfaction, labeling the new detour as more than just a minor inconvenience. He criticized VIA Rail's suggestion to rely on GO Transit services for westward travel before heading east as “ludicrous.”
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow voiced her support for the Scarborough community's pushback against VIA Rail's proposed changes, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in the decision-making process. “When Scarborough fights, Scarborough wins!” she affirmed during a public address, promising continued advocacy against any future service alterations.
The developments surrounding Guildwood Station illustrate ongoing tensions between transportation service providers and the communities they serve. As VIA Rail continues to gather input from local residents and officials, it remains to be seen how future plans for the station will unfold, with an emphasis on balancing operational efficiency and community accessibility.
