Russia Warns NATO: Nuclear Threat Over Kaliningrad

BRUSSELS (AP) — Russia has issued a stark warning to NATO, stating it would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons to defend Kaliningrad if any NATO member attempts to isolate the region from the rest of the country. This warning echoes statements made by various Russian embassies throughout Europe this week, which claimed that Moscow possesses information suggesting NATO is planning an air and naval blockade on Kaliningrad and its surrounding area.

The embassies in the United Kingdom and Ireland communicated these warnings through their Telegram channels, while the Russian Embassy in Belgium disseminated the information to the Tass news agency. The statements criticized European leaders for “playing a dangerous game” by alleging that Russia might attack another country or escalate its campaign of destabilizing activities in Europe, including drone strikes and sabotage. Moscow has rebuffed such claims, labeling them as absurd.

The Russian Embassy in Ireland specifically stated, “There should be no mistake — Russia would be ready to use all its arsenal, including nuclear weapons, to defend its territory if NATO countries try to isolate Kaliningrad region from the rest of the country.” This firm stance underscores the heightened tensions in the region.

NATO responded to these threats with strong condemnation. Spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed on Wednesday that Russia had sent a written communication to the alliance. Hart declared, “We strongly denounce the threat of force, including any irresponsible nuclear rhetoric.” She emphasized that NATO does not have any intentions of targeting Kaliningrad and reiterated that the alliance operates on a defensive basis, assuring that its activities do not pose any risk to Russian territory.

Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave situated along the Baltic Sea, is encircled by NATO members Poland and Lithuania. The region is significant for Russia as it houses its main Baltic naval base and various military assets, including nuclear-capable Iskander missiles. Western military officials have suggested that key military installations in Kaliningrad would likely be targeted should Russia initiate an attack against any NATO ally.

In conjunction with these developments, NATO allies have engaged in a series of military exercises within the Baltic Sea region, with additional exercises planned for October. The alliance launched “Operation Baltic Sentry” last year, aimed at safeguarding crucial communication cables and pipelines in the area.

European leaders have expressed concerns that Russia might strike another nation. In response to inquiries regarding Russia’s warnings, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov attributed the situation to “rampant statements” from Poland and other European countries concerning Kaliningrad. He remarked, “It’s only natural that our diplomats are trying to remind the hotheads in Europe about our policy documents regarding this matter.”

European leaders and intelligence agencies have raised alarms about the potential for Russia to intensify its hybrid campaign, indicating possible military action against another country within a few years, particularly if Russia achieves success in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte articulated last week that the increasing number of incidents demonstrates that Russian President Vladimir Putin is losing ground in the war, which has now entered its fifth year. He suggested that the most effective counteraction involves providing more weaponry to Ukraine.

Hart further referred to Russia's use of hybrid tactics as a sign of desperation, reinforcing NATO’s unwavering support for Ukraine. She stated, “We have what it takes to defend every inch of Allied territory and remain strong, ready, and able to counter any threat.” The ongoing tensions and the potential for escalation in the Baltic region remain critical issues for both NATO and Russia as geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve.
