A mother, Adesuwe Uwadia, is seeking justice for her seven-year-old son, Royal, who tragically fell from the 15th-floor balcony of a high-rise building under construction in Black Creek, Toronto. The incident occurred on May 31 at approximately 9 p.m., when emergency crews were called to reports of a child falling. Despite attempts to revive him, Royal's life could not be saved.

According to Toronto police, the circumstances surrounding the death are not considered suspicious. The building, currently undergoing repairs from a previous fire, displayed signs instructing residents to avoid the balcony area for safety reasons. One warning read, “Danger, do not access balcony area. Windows and doors have been secured for your safety.”

The family alleges that the sliding door to the balcony was locked, but the window was not. Royal’s 16-year-old sister, who witnessed the incident and preferred to remain unnamed, mentioned that the absence of a stopper on the window allowed her brother to climb out. “They didn’t do that for the window, they didn’t put any locks in place,” she stated. “Because of that, my brother fell. We were there when it happened, we were watching him. But if you have kids, you know they move fast.”

Furthermore, the family disclosed that the balcony from which Royal fell lacked any railing or barrier. They had previously contacted management multiple times regarding a request to have a lock installed on the window but claim they received no response. Friends of the family, including a woman named Blessing, emphasized the neglect from the building’s management, stating, “They know this boy is special needs, there was no accommodation for him. She kept going to complain, ‘Please come and fix this window.’”

Following Royal's tragic passing, Uwadia noted that locks were installed on the windows of the units the very next day. “When the boy died… the next day they quickly run to visit, to fix the lock,” she expressed, highlighting the apparent urgency felt by the management only after the incident had occurred.

Royal’s family remembers him as a vibrant and beloved child within his school community. Uwadia’s friend, Blessing, praised her for being a responsible and caring mother, stating, “I was there when Royal was born. She’s been a very good mom. I can say that. She’s been very responsible, she works, she’s a caregiver.”

As of now, CityNews has reached out to the management of the building for comments but has not yet received a response regarding the incident and the safety measures in place.
