WASHINGTON (AP) — Katie Zacharia is set to leave her position as White House press secretary after a brief and tumultuous tenure marked by scrutiny of her professional qualifications and her performance in press briefings. According to an anonymous source, the decision regarding her departure will be made public shortly. The announcement comes just hours after President Donald Trump expressed his doubts about her future in the role, suggesting she should reconsider her decision to take the job.

Zacharia's appointment, which was made on October 9, 2023, came as a surprise to many, particularly as she succeeded Karoline Leavitt, the youngest individual ever to hold the press secretary position. Zacharia's inaugural briefing, which took place on Tuesday, was characterized by hesitance and confusion as she attempted to highlight the president's achievements. Criticism arose soon after, focusing on her past claims of being a lawyer despite not having passed the bar exam or held any formal legal credentials.

During a lengthy interaction with reporters, Trump mentioned that he had advised Zacharia to consider stepping down, saying, “I think you're better off being happy.” He expressed sympathy for her situation, noting that he believed she had been subjected to unfair treatment by the media, describing it as “brutalized.” Trump stated he would evaluate her future following his weekend trip, signaling that a final decision would be reached soon.

Zacharia's first and only briefing was notably short, lasting only 14 minutes during which she took questions from just three reporters, all from conservative-friendly outlets. She justified the brevity of her appearance by stating she wanted to allow Trump ample time for his own press session. Her subsequent travels with the president to rallies in Alaska, Arizona, and Montana did not include additional press briefings.

In a recent Fox News appearance, when questioned about whether she had the president's confidence, Zacharia responded, “I hope to be able to build the trust and confidence of everyone around me,” but she did not indicate when she would hold her next briefing. Tensions surrounding her professional background were amplified after she described herself as a lawyer during her time in conservative media, a claim that led to severe questioning regarding her lack of bar passage and credentials. When pressed by Fox host Sean Hannity on why she didn't more clearly communicate her experience, Zacharia defended her usage of the term 'lawyer' in the context of her legal analysis work, stating she had previously practiced in China.

Throughout the scrutiny, both Zacharia and Trump emphasized that her role was in press and communications rather than as a legal advisor for the administration. Prior to her brief tenure at the White House, Zacharia worked in communications for Trump Media, the organization behind the president’s social media platform, Truth Social, and she had a short stint at the Department of Homeland Security during Trump's second term.

The forthcoming change in White House press leadership evokes memories of the chaotic personnel decisions that characterized Trump's first term, albeit absent from his current administration until now. As the situation develops, speculation about who may fill Zacharia's position continues to circulate, with Trump indicating that there are numerous candidates eager for the role.
