Peel Regional Police (PRP) have reported the arrest and subsequent charges against a man suspected of being involved in nearly 20 commercial break-and-enters across Brampton. The police emphasized the seriousness of the incidents that have been occurring over the past two months, which predominantly took place overnight.
Investigators focused their efforts on a pattern of break-and-enters that affected numerous businesses in downtown Brampton, particularly in the area surrounding Queen Street East and Kennedy Road. The nature of the offenses indicated a targeted approach, as the perpetrator aimed at local restaurants and retail establishments.
Following an intensive investigation, law enforcement officials identified Shane Jason Elliot, a 45-year-old man, as the primary suspect in these crimes. His method of operation involved gaining illicit access to these commercial properties by forcibly breaking in—typically by smashing the front glass doors or windows using a rock or a brick. This tactic allowed him to enter undetected during late-night hours.
As a result of their findings, police filed a total of 17 charges against Elliot. Among these charges are 13 counts related to break and enter along with committing an indictable offense, as well as an additional four counts specifically for break-and-enter with the intent to commit an indictable offense. These charges reflect the severity and frequency of the crimes committed, showcasing a significant impact on the local business community.
The Peel Regional Police's dedicated investigation underscores their commitment to addressing and curbing the rise of commercial thefts in the area. Their proactive measures in identifying and apprehending suspects are vital to ensuring the safety and security of Brampton's businesses and residents. With the recent arrest of Elliot, the police aim to reassure the public and local entrepreneurs that measures are being taken to prevent such criminal activities from occurring in the future.
