LOS ANGELES (AP) After a long 44-year wait, the Milwaukee Brewers have returned to the World Series, marking a significant milestone in the franchise’s history.
The Brewers showcased their prowess by sweeping the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series (NLCS), clinching their place in the World Series with a decisive 6-4 victory in Game 4. The team’s strong bullpen and resilience in the face of adversity played pivotal roles in their success, demonstrating their readiness to compete at the highest level.
Manager Pat Murphy expressed his team's determination, stating, “We weren’t coming in to play patty-cake. We were hungry, and as long as it’s an even playing field, we’re going to come in and give it our best shot to win.” This attitude was evident in the game, where Garrett Mitchell hit a crucial go-ahead home run in the sixth inning.
Milwaukee’s performance throughout the season also laid the groundwork for their postseason success, as they finished the regular season with an impressive 103 wins. Following their victory over the Dodgers, the Brewers will have a week off before hosting either Cleveland or Tampa Bay in the World Series opener on October 23.
During Game 4, the Dodgers initially took a commanding lead, fueled by Shohei Ohtani's three-run homer in the second inning, which put them ahead 4-0 early in the game. However, the Brewers showcased their ability to bounce back, with David Hamilton hitting a two-run homer in the ninth to extend their lead. Hamilton, who had only four home runs during the regular season, played a critical role in a game where Milwaukee had to rally from behind.
Brewers captain Christian Yelich commented on their determination, stating, “We got down early tonight and we were like, it’s going to be a great story. We’re going to come back and win this.” This spirit of resilience was contagious among the players and evident in their overall performance.
Pitcher Aaron Ashby contributed significantly to the Brewers’ success, throwing three scoreless innings to secure the save. This victory also marked the franchise’s first NL pennant and their second overall, with their previous World Series appearance occurring in 1982 when they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers made history by becoming the first major league team to complete a postseason sweep after having been swept by the same opponent in the prior postseason.
The Dodgers' aspirations for a historic third consecutive championship fell short, hindered by a lack of offensive production and injuries to key players on their roster. Despite the disappointing outcome, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the Brewers’ performance, noting, “Those guys played flawless. You’ve got to sometimes tip your cap.”
The Brewers' victory is a testament to their perseverance and determination, as they overcame previous setbacks against the Dodgers to achieve this remarkable feat. With the score tied at 4-all, Mitchell’s sixth-inning home run, combined with the excellent work of the bullpen, secured Milwaukee’s place in the World Series.
In reflecting on their success, Brewers owner Mark Attanasio expressed gratitude for the community support and acknowledged the contributions of late broadcaster Bob Uecker and former owner Bud Selig, emphasizing the significance of this achievement for the entire state of Wisconsin.
The Brewers' journey to the World Series is not only a triumph for the team but also an inspiring story of resilience and determination that their fans cherish.
