As Toronto gears up for its annual Pride weekend, the local police are collaborating closely with event organizers to ensure a safe and successful celebration. In a recent statement, Chief Supt. Mandeep Mann outlined the precautions that will be in place during the festivities.

Although Pride Toronto has made the decision to prohibit uniformed officers from participating in the various marches and parades, police presence will still be significant for security reasons. Chief Supt. Mann emphasized that the community can anticipate an increased police presence throughout the city, particularly in the village area, to uphold a safe and inclusive environment for all attendees.

Mann specifically warned attendees about the rise in pickpocketing during large gatherings. “Please be mindful of your personal belongings, especially your cellphones,” he advised, sharing that over 300 cellphones were reported stolen during last year's Pride events. The Chief Superintendent highlighted that thieves often take advantage of the bustling crowds to target these valuable items.

Additionally, he addressed the concern of potential parade interruptions, referencing incidents from the previous year where the Pride parade was halted by pro-Palestinian protestors. The decision to cancel the remaining portion of the parade came four hours into the event, raising questions about how disruptions might be handled this year. Mann assured that while police are prepared for the possibility of protest-related interruptions, the response strategy will depend on guidance from Pride Toronto organizers.

“We don’t have information suggesting that similar disruptions will occur this year, but we will collaborate closely with Pride organizers. Ultimately, the decision on how to respond will rest with them, and our role will be to support their decision-making process to ensure a safe and effective execution,” Mann stated.

In response to the tragic events that took place during the Lapu Lapu Day festival in Vancouver in April, as well as similar incidents globally, Toronto police have implemented robust security measures. “We don’t have any credible threats directed towards the Pride festivities, but we will remain vigilant throughout the celebrations,” Mann affirmed. He explained that the police would deploy vehicle mitigation measures along the parade route and in surrounding areas to bolster safety. Barriers will be set up to protect both spectators and participants, aiming to prevent any potential vehicular threats.

Toronto police are also aware that many attendees will likely consume alcohol and other substances during the festivities. They have urged the public to enjoy responsibly and considerately.
