PROVO, Utah (AP) — An attorney for 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who has been charged with the aggravated murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, requested additional time during a court appearance on Monday to review a substantial volume of evidence submitted by the prosecution. This evidence will play a crucial role in the upcoming phases of the legal proceedings, and the defense is considering whether to pursue a preliminary hearing.

A preliminary hearing is typically held to determine if there is sufficient evidence to move forward with a trial. While defendants have the option to waive this step, Robinson's newly appointed attorney, Kathryn Nester, indicated that they do not intend to do so. The prosecution has charged Robinson with aggravated murder and intends to seek the death penalty, positioning this case as a significant legal battle.

During the brief hearing, both defense and prosecution acknowledged the "voluminous" nature of the evidence against Robinson. The defendant appeared via audio link from jail at his defense team’s request, as he was not present physically in the courtroom. Judge Tony Graf scheduled the next hearing for October 30.

Following the hearing, attorneys from both sides refrained from making comments to the media. The proceedings took place in Provo, Utah, near the Utah Valley University campus in nearby Orem, where students are still grappling with the aftermath of the shooting incident that occurred on September 10.

Authorities apprehended Robinson after he voluntarily presented himself to law enforcement alongside his parents at the sheriff's office in his hometown, located more than three hours from the scene of the shooting. The prosecution later disclosed incriminating text messages and DNA evidence linking Robinson to the crime. Notably, a note left by Robinson for his romantic partner before the shooting indicated his intent to kill Kirk, describing the activist as one of the country’s leading conservative figures. Prosecutor Jeff Gray revealed that Robinson expressed a lack of tolerance for Kirk’s “hatred” in a text message sent to his partner.

The assassination of Kirk, a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump and a vocal advocate for conservative policies, has sparked a strong reaction within Republican circles. Many have pledged to continue his mission of advancing right-wing political ideologies. Trump has labeled Kirk a “martyr” for freedom and has threatened to take action against what he refers to as the “radical left,” further politicizing the aftermath of the murder.

In the wake of Kirk's death, several individuals across the United States have faced repercussions for voicing support for him, including terminations and suspensions from their jobs. Notable figures affected include public and private sector employees and media personalities such as Jimmy Kimmel, whose late-night show experienced a suspension before being reinstated by ABC.

Kirk's organization, Turning Point USA, has played a pivotal role in mobilizing young evangelical Christians into the political sphere through various means such as podcasts, social media, and campus events. In light of the situation, several prominent Republicans, including Utah Governor Spencer Cox and Senator Mike Lee, are scheduled to participate in upcoming campus events that Kirk had planned to attend, showcasing the ongoing influence and reach of his politically motivated mission.
