Feed Scarborough, one of the largest food banks in Toronto, has severed its affiliation with the Daily Bread Food Bank network due to allegations of financial mismanagement. This decision was confirmed by Daily Bread, which stated that as of January 31, it has ended its partnership with Feed Scarborough after discovering discrepancies in the organization’s invoices related to past expenditures.
The allegations of financial and governance mismanagement have been reported to the Toronto police, who are currently conducting an investigation. As of now, no charges have been filed, and the claims have yet to be substantiated in court.
Neil Hetherington, the CEO of Daily Bread, stated, “We retained external legal counsel to conduct a comprehensive financial investigation and shared our findings with the appropriate authorities, including the Toronto Police Service.” This step reflects their commitment to addressing the serious nature of the allegations and ensuring transparency in their operations.
Daily Bread operates as a central distribution hub and support mechanism for a network of 144 member agencies, managing over 200 local food bank programs across Toronto. This extensive network plays a critical role in providing food assistance to vulnerable populations in the city.
Feed Scarborough has historically received millions of dollars' worth of food each year from the Toronto charity. From 2021 to 2023, the organization was granted a total of $620,000 in funding. However, Daily Bread's financial audits have indicated potential discrepancies in Feed Scarborough’s invoicing, suggesting that the reported amount of grant money received may have been inflated, with suggested overstatements amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.
In response to these allegations, Suman Roy, the Founder and CEO of Feed Scarborough, expressed his commitment to addressing the situation. He informed CityNews that, upon learning of the allegations, the board of Feed Scarborough took immediate action by hiring a third-party organization to perform a thorough forensic audit. This demonstrates an effort to ensure that all financial practices are transparent and compliant with legal standards.
Moreover, Roy emphasized that Feed Scarborough is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation. He has conveyed confidence that no funds from Daily Bread were misused for non-charitable purposes, aiming to reassure stakeholders of the integrity of their operations.
As of February, it has been announced that SOSO Ministries will step in to provide ongoing support for Feed Scarborough's clients. This transition illustrates the community's commitment to sustaining essential food assistance during this period of uncertainty for Feed Scarborough.
