York Regional Police are conducting a search for two suspects involved in a shooting incident that occurred early Sunday morning outside a residence in Vaughan. The event took place on Madeira Avenue, located west of Jane Street and south of Teston Road, at approximately 4:15 a.m.
Muiz Awan, a resident of the home targeted in the incident, expressed confusion over why their home was singled out. He noted that such an occurrence had never happened before and that the neighborhood had always felt secure. Awan described the situation, stating, “There was a group of guys that came in. They were all wearing like ski masks and hoods and everything, and they came in and they seemed to only target my brother’s car.”
Awan recounted the events, saying the suspects initially smashed the car windows with a hammer before one of them brandished a firearm. “The last guy kind of pulled out a gun and he just starts going ham on all of the wheels, and he put two shots into each of the wheels. I don’t know what he was trying to do,” he added. This specifically targeted vandalism left the vehicle damaged but fortunately resulted in no physical injuries.
Surveillance footage shared with local media appeared to capture the two suspects near the vehicle parked in front of the residence. Shortly thereafter, multiple gunshots were heard—reportedly as many as eight. The video then showed the suspects fleeing the scene in a dark-colored vehicle.
Police are currently investigating the incident and have described one of the suspects as heavyset, last seen wearing a black hat and a dark coat. The Firearms Investigation Team is leading the case, and the police expect to maintain a significant presence in the area as they continue their inquiries.
In light of this incident, Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca issued a statement emphasizing the need for stricter penalties relating to serious crimes. He stated, “This activity is completely unacceptable in Vaughan or in any other community for that matter.” Del Duca's remarks reflect growing concerns about safety in the region and underscore the community's desire for a swift response to violent acts.
In summary, the shooting incident in Vaughan is alarming to both residents and officials alike, raising questions about safety and community security. As the investigation progresses, authorities aim to identify and apprehend the suspects to restore confidence within the community.
