The Toronto Maple Leafs faced a disappointing defeat, falling 5-2 to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday at Scotiabank Arena. The loss marked the Maple Leafs' third consecutive defeat, with their last victory coming on February 4 against the Edmonton Oilers, just before the Olympic break. This match was particularly significant as it was the Leafs' first home game since captain Auston Matthews returned from winning gold with Team USA at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
Drake Batherson and Dylan Cozens each showcased their scoring abilities by netting two goals, while Thomas Chabot also found the back of the net for the Senators. Cozens further contributed to the team’s success with an additional assist, helping Ottawa improve their record to 29-22-8 for the season. In contrast, the Maple Leafs dropped to 27-24-9 after struggling to maintain momentum throughout the game.
The game began positively for the Maple Leafs, as Morgan Rielly opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season less than three minutes into the first period. However, their initial lead quickly diminished as the Senators responded aggressively, landing the next 19 shots on goal. Ottawa scored three unanswered goals to take a commanding two-goal lead midway through the second period, setting the tone for the remainder of the match.
William Nylander managed to trim the Senators’ lead to 3-2, but Batherson answered back with his second goal of the period just moments later, a play that the Maple Leafs challenged for offside but ultimately lost. Cozens then capitalized on a subsequent penalty, scoring his second goal in the process and forcing the Maple Leafs to replace their starting goalie, Joseph Woll, after he made 23 saves on 28 shots. Anthony Stolarz took over in goal, stopping all 12 shots he faced for the remainder of the game.
On the other side of the ice, Senators' Linus Ullmark recorded 21 saves, contributing significantly to his team's victory. The match turned tumultuous in the early third period when frustration boiled over for the Maple Leafs, resulting in a brawl in front of Stolarz that culminated in a total of 28 penalty minutes. Max Domi received a notable 10-minute misconduct for his part in the altercation.
Despite the loss, the game had moments of recognition for the Maple Leafs' Olympians. During the first television break, the team honored their three players who participated in the Olympics—Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Nylander, and Matthews. The reception for Matthews, however, was mixed. Initially met with boos from segments of the crowd, the reaction turned into cheers, especially after the American team, led by captain Brady Tkachuk, also appeared on the big screen. This public sentiment was likely influenced by the U.S.'s recent victory over Canada in the gold-medal game.
One noteworthy statistic included Matthews extending his career-long assist streak to six games by assisting Rielly’s first-period goal. Interestingly, the one-time 69-goal scorer has now gone seven games without scoring a goal, raising questions regarding his performance during this stretch of games.
Looking ahead, the Senators are set to visit the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, aiming to build on their current winning momentum. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs will look to break their losing streak as they host the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, hoping to regain their winning form.
