A significant construction undertaking is scheduled to lead to the closure of multiple intersections in downtown Toronto for the majority of the year. The project will briefly pause during the FIFA World Cup. The upcoming work will primarily focus on the intersection of College and Bay streets, which will be closed to both vehicles and cyclists starting March 2, 2026. This initial phase encompasses the replacement of old streetcar tracks and necessary overhead upgrades, anticipated to last for six weeks, with the intersection reopening in mid-April before the World Cup.
During this construction phase, full closure of the intersection will be enforced for vehicles and bicycles. While there will be temporary sidewalk closures, the City of Toronto has assured that access to local businesses and properties will remain intact, aiming to minimize disruption to the community.
The construction will significantly impact several Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) routes. The 506 and 306 Carlton streetcars will be diverted in both directions via McCaul Street, Dundas Street, and Parliament Street. Additionally, a replacement bus service will be instituted to operate east and west along major thoroughfares, including Spadina Avenue, College Street, University Avenue, Gerrard Street West, and Yonge Street. The 19 Bay bus will also reroute via Wellesley Street, Queen's Park Crescent West, Gerrard Street, and Yonge Street.
Following the initial phase, further construction will commence at the end of July 2026, focusing on sewer replacement on College Street from Yonge to Bay, along with streetcar track replacement on Carlton Street from Church Street to Yonge Street. This segment of the project is expected to continue until September 2026, with one lane of travel being maintained in each direction on both College and Carlton streets throughout this period.
The final phase of the project will focus on the replacement of the TTC streetcar tracks on College Street from Yonge to Bay, with the anticipated completion date set for December 2026. During this last stage, both northbound and southbound traffic on Yonge Street at College Street will be closed; however, one travel lane will be preserved in each direction on College and Carlton streets during the process.
