A 50-year-old man from Toronto, identified as Joseph Michael Mortillaro, is confronting new charges following his arrest last month for allegedly luring children online for sexual purposes. This situation has prompted authorities from both the Niagara and Peel regions to initiate an undercover investigation that began in March 2025.
Mortillaro was taken into custody on February 23, where he faced initial charges that included two counts of luring a child through telecommunication to facilitate sexual interference and one count of harassing communications. These allegations arose from his suspected activities on various online platforms aimed at connecting with minors for illicit purposes.
As part of the inquiry, detectives executed a search warrant, which led to the seizure of Mortillaro’s electronic devices. A forensic examination of these devices yielded significant findings that contributed to the escalation of the case, resulting in additional criminal charges against him.
On Monday, the Niagara Regional Police announced three new charges against Mortillaro. These include possessing child sexual abuse material and making such material available to others. Investigators suspect that he operated under the usernames “DadOfTwo” and “Mike” on different online platforms, which facilitated his alleged offenses against children.
The police underscored the ubiquity of online platforms that enable individuals with malicious intentions to engage with minors, create, share, and store Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). They affirmed the commitment to identifying offenders who attempt to lure children through anonymous online accounts, stating that these individuals will be held accountable for their actions.
Authorities reiterated that vigilance is essential in protecting children from online predation, emphasizing their proactive measures in detecting and prosecuting such crimes. The case remains a reminder of the ongoing challenges that law enforcement faces in combating internet-based exploitation.
