LOS ANGELES (AP) - Britney Spears, the pop sensation, was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) on March 4, 2023. Reports indicate that she refused to exit her BMW for approximately 10 minutes before police intervention. Once she emerged from the vehicle, law enforcement noted the smell of alcohol on her breath, alongside visible signs of impairment during field sobriety tests, as detailed in a police report and dashcam footage obtained by the Associated Press.

The California Highway Patrol report described Spears’ condition as concerning. Her speech was rapid and slurred, her balance was unsteady, and she was noticeably fidgety. The report also highlighted her fluctuating mood, ranging from confrontational and agitated to flamboyant and compliant. At times, she even spoke with a British accent. During the interaction, Spears claimed, “I could probably drink four bottles of wine and take care of you, I'm an angel,” yet insisted that she had consumed only one mimosa earlier that day and assessed her level of intoxication as “zero.” Breathalyzer tests revealed her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at .05 and .06, which is below the .08 threshold that indicates impairment in California.

In addition to alcohol, a bottle of Adderall, a medication typically used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), was discovered in her purse. The report stated that the Adderall was not prescribed to her. Spears also provided a blood sample for drug screening, though the results from this test were not included in the police report.

On the day of the arrest, Spears was initially pulled over for speeding and weaving on U.S. 101 in Ventura County, near the Los Angeles County line. She was charged with misdemeanor DUI and later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving involving alcohol and drugs, which allowed her to avoid additional jail time. Ventura County prosecutors explained that the plea deal is a common resolution for first-time offenders without previous DUI incidents, crashes, or injuries involved.

During the arrest, Spears expressed her reluctance to exit the vehicle, citing past experiences of being pranked and harassed, stressing her right to decline such requests as a woman. She voiced concerns for her safety, proposing that officers accompany her to her home instead. “I’ll make you food or lasagna, whatever you want. I have a pool,” Spears was recorded saying, as she attempted to negotiate her way out of the situation.

Eventually, officers handcuffed her and transported her to jail, where she was released a few hours later on bail. Following the incident, Spears voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility. On May 4, 2023, she accepted a plea deal for reckless driving, which was a strategic decision to expedite the resolution of her legal issues, according to her attorney, Michael Goldstein. He emphasized that while no one is pleased about entering a guilty plea, it was viewed as a beneficial outcome considering the circumstances.

Britney Spears rose to immense fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s with hit songs and multiple platinum-selling albums, such as “Toxic,” “...Baby One More Time,” and “Oops!… I Did It Again.” Her life, often chronicled in the tabloids, faced intense scrutiny as she battled mental health challenges and dealt with invasive paparazzi coverage. From 2008 to 2021, Spears was under a court-ordered conservatorship primarily managed by her father, a situation that garnered widespread attention and criticism. Following her release from this conservatorship in 2021, she has since experienced significant life changes, including marriage, divorce, and the publication of her bestselling memoir, “The Woman in Me.”
