MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – A strong wind event during the Morgantown Super Regional NCAA baseball tournament on Saturday caused injuries to five individuals when fierce weather conditions suddenly struck the gathering of fans. The game was taking place at Kendrick Family Ballpark, where West Virginia faced off against Cal Poly. As the storm waged, university officials reported that emergency services were summoned to transport the injured to local hospitals for medical treatment.
Social media footage captured the chaotic moments as winds reached speeds of up to 40 mph. In the video, spectators can be seen struggling with a tent that was violently disrupted by the gusts, one individual was thrown into the air while attempting to maintain control over the structure, and another person was seen rolling uncontrollably down a nearby hill.
As the weather conditions intensified, fans rushed to find safety in a designated area known as Randy’s Ridge. Witnesses recounted the frenzied situation that unfolded. Keith Hill, a West Virginia fan, described his experience during the storm, noting, “I was just trying to hold my weight on the pole with the cement block, and then it started sliding. Another guy joined in, and he’s trying to hold another pole, and then a big gust of wind came.” The tension escalated as people became entangled with ropes and poles in the midst of the storm.
West Virginia University police confirmed that the five injured fans were indeed taken to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment following the incident. The safety of the attendees remained a priority, with West Virginia athletics spokesperson Michael Fragale assuring, “We have been in touch with health-care providers in the area to ensure those affected are supported in their recovery.”
The game was momentarily halted due to the weather delay, causing apprehension among the fans and players alike. Despite the chaotic circumstances, West Virginia managed to secure a decisive victory, winning the game with a score of 17-1. This victory marked a historic moment for the West Virginia baseball program, as it advanced to the College World Series for the first time ever.
