On Saturday, gunfire broke out near the Old West End Festival in Toledo, Ohio, resulting in at least 12 people being wounded. The chaos unfolded in front of a numerous crowd attending the annual event, which features live music, food vendors, home tours, and shopping, prompting many attendees to seek cover while others rushed to aid the injured.

According to Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan, no suspects were apprehended shortly after the incident, and officials have encouraged witnesses to come forward with any photos or video footage that may assist in the investigation. Heffernan indicated that it seemed at least two individuals were firing weapons, likely targeting each other rather than innocent bystanders.

Two of the wounded individuals are currently in critical condition, and the age range of the victims spans from 14 to 61 years old, with the majority in their early 20s. In a statement expressing his concern, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine emphasized the need for festivals to offer secure environments for families, free from the threat of violence.

Social media has been flooded with videos depicting the frantic scene, showing individuals fleeing from the sound of gunfire and emergency personnel administering assistance to the injured. Fire Chief Allison Armstrong noted challenges in transporting victims to the hospital due to closed roads and heavy traffic as attendees left the festival, but confirmed that all patients were taken from the scene within an hour.

Witness Kevin Berry, who was enjoying the live music at the neighborhood arboretum with friends, recounted hearing a series of gunshots. As chaos ensued, he saw a gun discarded on the ground nearby. With his medical training from his service in the Navy, Berry assisted in providing help to at least five individuals he found with gunshot wounds spread across the arboretum area.

The Old West End Festival, celebrated in Toledo's historic district, is a much-anticipated two-day event marking the commencement of the summer festival season. George Kral, the city’s safety director, mentioned deliberations with festival organizers regarding the continuation of events for that weekend, lamenting that such a disheartening event overshadowed the festival's significance.
