CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – Two transgender girls, Parker Tirrell and Iris Turmelle, who were among the first to challenge President Donald Trump's executive order titled "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports," have officially withdrawn their lawsuit in New Hampshire. The withdrawal comes in light of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld state bans on transgender athletes participating in girls' sports, alongside personal hardships faced by the plaintiffs, as indicated by their lawyer, Chris Erchull from GLAD Law.
Erchull commented on the situation, stating that the case was always about ensuring equal opportunities for the young girls to participate in school activities. He highlighted their courage in facing hostility, which illuminated the human costs of legislation targeting transgender youth.
Tirrell and Turmelle had taken on Trump's executive order last year and amended their 2024 complaint against a New Hampshire law prohibiting transgender girls from competing in school sports. A federal judge had temporarily allowed them to play while the case was ongoing. For Tirrell, this meant being able to continue her participation on her high school's girls' soccer team, whereas Turmelle was afforded an opportunity to try out for various sports.
Both parties had agreed to pause the case, pending a Supreme Court ruling regarding similar laws in Idaho and West Virginia that restrict transgender girls and women from participating in sports. Last month, the Supreme Court upheld these laws, also ruling that such bans do not violate Title IX, the federal law aimed at prohibiting sex discrimination in education.
Following the political climate concerning transgender rights, Turmelle and her family decided to relocate from New Hampshire last summer. This decision was influenced by the passage of legislation concerning transgender individuals, including a law signed by Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte that restricted medical care for transgender minors. Turmelle's mother, Amy Manzetti, expressed concerns in an op-ed about the risks of staying in New Hampshire, where laws sought to "erase" her daughter.
Many Republican-controlled states have introduced laws constraining gender-affirming care for transgender minors and have restricted the use of school bathrooms by transgender individuals, alongside sports participation limitations. The Williams Institute at UCLA indicates that roughly 3% of youth aged 13 to 17 identify as transgender.
Corinne Goodwin, executive director of the Eastern PA Trans Equality Project, noted the significant challenges families face when relocating, such as finding new jobs and integrating children into new school systems. However, these families feel compelled to make such changes for the well-being of their children, prioritizing their access to necessary care and opportunities.
For Tirrell, her experience on the high school girls' junior varsity soccer team started positively, with her parents celebrating every goal she scored. However, as the season progressed, political tensions made her reluctant to continue. She faced pressures and concerns about potential conflicts during games, particularly after a previous incident where parents from an opposing team protested against her participation.
The atmosphere around her games became tense, with an increased presence of school administrators and law enforcement, causing Tirrell to feel uneasy. Ultimately, she decided to stop playing soccer, remarking that the sport was no longer enjoyable due to the surrounding political climate. Parker’s father described the atmosphere at the games as characterized by "palpable tension," making it difficult for her to focus on the sport she loves.
Tirrell's parents still have hopes for her return to soccer in the future. Meanwhile, they support her decision to advocate against discrimination, recognizing the growth she has undergone due to these experiences. Her mother conveyed that although Parker is still connected to her supportive peers, she remains concerned about how others might react if she were to rejoin the game.
