Public health officials in Peel Region are expressing concern regarding potential exposure to measles among passengers who traveled on two specific flights and were present at Pearson International Airport. This warning follows the confirmation of a measles case linked to these locations.
Peel Public Health has identified that individuals who were on Flight BG305 from Bangladesh to Toronto, which included a layover in Rome, as well as Flight AC1986 from Toronto to Moncton on July 7, could have been exposed to the virus. Furthermore, it is important for anyone who was at Terminals 3 and 1 of Pearson International Airport between 1:11 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. on the same day to be aware of their potential exposure.
Authorities emphasize the importance of ensuring that individuals are fully vaccinated against measles. Symptoms typically associated with the illness include fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and rashes. Those potentially exposed are advised to monitor their health for symptoms until July 28, as measles symptoms can emerge as early as seven days following exposure.
Dr. Atiba Nelson, the Associate Medical Officer of Health for Peel Region, mentioned that, although the overall risk of measles in the area remains low, the disease can spread rapidly, particularly among unvaccinated individuals. He stresses that it is crucial for those who may be at risk to take necessary precautions.
Measles is highly contagious and can be transmitted easily when an infected person breathes, coughs, sneezes, or talks. The virus remains viable in the air or on surfaces for over two hours, which increases the likelihood of infection in public spaces.
This incident marks the second confirmed case of measles reported in Peel Region in 2023. According to Public Health Ontario, a total of 27 measles cases have been documented across the province up until June 23.
In light of the ongoing concerns surrounding measles exposure, public health officials urge vigilance and adherence to vaccination protocols to mitigate the risk of outbreak.
