York Regional Police officers have announced the arrest of a man, Abdul Basit Raufi, 22, from Markham, who is alleged to have committed a series of sexual assaults in the Markham area over the span of one week. Raufi was taken into custody on Thursday and is facing multiple charges including four counts of sexual assault and one count of disguise with intent.

The incidents reportedly occurred in the evenings, specifically around Edward Jeffreys Avenue, in the vicinity of Markham Road and Roy Rainey Avenue. According to police officials, all the incidents involved the same suspect who was riding a bicycle at the time of the assaults. Investigators noted that the first reported incident happened on Monday, August 10, at approximately 6:40 p.m. During this encounter, the suspect approached a female pedestrian near Edward Jeffreys Avenue and Mingay Avenue.

As the suspect passed the victim on the sidewalk, he inappropriately touched her for sexual purposes before fleeing the scene. Subsequent similar incidents were reported on August 14 and August 17, suggesting a troubling pattern of behavior by the suspect.

In response to the serious nature of these offenses, investigators released a photograph of Raufi as they believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. The York Regional Police expressed a strong concern for public safety and are urging anyone who might have been affected or has information related to these incidents to reach out to them.

York Regional Police also highlighted that Raufi has ties to Brampton and may have taken steps to alter his physical appearance, potentially complicating the search for further victims or related evidence. Authorities are focused on encouraging community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, particularly in the areas affected by these assaults.
