VANCOUVER — Online retail giant Amazon has announced an increase in the average hourly base wage for its employees in Canada, raising it to $26.27, which reflects a $1 increase from the previous year. This change is set to take effect on September 27, 2026.

The company outlined in its statement that the increase translates to a notable four percent year-over-year growth. This adjustment means that full-time employees, who typically work 40 hours a week, can expect to earn over $54,000 annually on average. This wage enhancement underscores Amazon’s ongoing commitment to competitive compensation in the Canadian market.

Interestingly, the timing of this wage increase coincides closely with the conclusion of a mediation process mandated by the British Columbia Labour Relations Board. The union representing workers at Amazon’s Metro Vancouver warehouse, known as Unifor, has indicated that the announcement reflects the pressure the company is under as it nears the finalization of a new contract for its employees at the Delta, B.C. facility. The union has asserted that Amazon appears to be responding to the dynamics of the current labor negotiations.

Earlier last month, the labour board took a significant step by ruling in favor of binding arbitration to resolve the ongoing dispute between Amazon and the unionized workers. This decision came despite Amazon’s opposition, as the company had initially rejected a mediator's recommendation to shift towards arbitration. Instead, Amazon expressed a desire to continue direct negotiations with Unifor.

Further complicating matters, the labour board previously ruled that Amazon violated British Columbia’s labour code by excluding unionized workers in Delta from receiving scheduled pay increases that had been afforded to other employees in the organization. This legal finding added additional context to the current negotiations and wage adjustments.

Additionally, Amazon's recent statement announced that certain employees will benefit from another incentive, a 10 percent discount on groceries and daily essentials available on its Canadian website, starting on October 1, 2026. This move is perceived as an effort to enhance employee benefits and further instill goodwill among its workforce.
