KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — On Saturday, officials reported that Russian attacks across Ukraine resulted in the deaths of four individuals, marking another day of escalating violence in the ongoing conflict. In response, Ukraine has continued its offensive operations, targeting Russian oil refineries and industrial sites using long-range drones.
The aerial warfare between Moscow and Kyiv has intensified as U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would find a way to “settle” with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This comment came amidst the continuation of hostilities, as Russia has been deploying cruise and ballistic missiles, glide bombs, and drone attacks nearly five years after Moscow initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
President Zelenskyy emphasized the need for international awareness regarding Russia's daily escalations. He noted that Russian attacks have targeted residential areas in cities such as Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia, as well as in the Odesa, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions. In particular, two women lost their lives in Zaporizhzhia when they became trapped under the ruins of their home, according to the regional military administration. Additionally, a separate incident in Sumy resulted in the deaths of two other people.
In the Kyiv region, a Russian drone strike caused a fire at a warehouse in the Boryspil district, injuring two individuals. The capital also saw multiple drone strikes that injured four people and damaged several residential and office buildings. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that one of the attacks in Kyiv had impacted a data center crucial for mobile internet services and Starlink satellite communications.
In a separate offensive, Ukraine launched attacks on Russian oil refineries and industrial facilities using long-range drones. A Ukrainian drone strike in the Krasnodar region of Russia reportedly resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to two others. Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev disclosed that the attack ignited fires at two industrial sites but did not offer extensive details. President Zelenskyy later confirmed that the Ilsky oil refinery in that region had been compromised.
Ukrainian operations also claimed three lives overnight in the Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, as reported by Yevgeny Balitsky, the head of the Moscow-installed local administration.
Trump's comments regarding a potential settlement between Zelenskyy and Putin came after a recent meeting held during the U.N. General Assembly. He expressed optimism that Zelenskyy could reach an agreement with Putin and suggested that a resolution might materialize before the onset of winter. Trump remarked, “You know what I want him to do? Make a deal,” stressing the importance of both leaders coming to a resolution.
While in New York, Zelenskyy took the opportunity to call on the United Nations to impose sanctions and trade restrictions on Russia to deprive it of the financial resources necessary to continue its military efforts. Despite numerous diplomatic initiatives aimed at reaching a conclusion to the conflict, lasting peace has remained elusive.
In summary, the conflict in Ukraine continues to rage, with both sides intensifying their military operations and casualties mounting. The international community remains hopeful for a diplomatic resolution, but the path forward remains fraught with challenges.
