Man Drags to Death by Subway After Bag Gets Stuck

NEW YORK (AP) – A tragic incident occurred during the Monday evening rush hour when a man was killed after being dragged by a subway train in New York City. The victim, Yaw Boahene, 57, was leaving the train at a Brooklyn station around 6 p.m. when his shopping bag became caught in the closing doors of the train.

According to police reports, as Boahene attempted to exit, the bag snagged, pulling him onto the train tracks where he was subsequently run over by the departing train. Officers responded to the scene and found Boahene “unconscious and unresponsive” on the tracks. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner's office is tasked with determining the official cause of death as the police investigation into the incident continues. In the wake of the fatality, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), responsible for the subway system, reported that both the train operator and conductor have been temporarily removed from service, a standard procedure during investigations of this nature.

The train involved in the incident was one of the newest models in the MTA fleet. It underwent inspections following the death, as well as a previous inspection in July, with no mechanical issues identified. This incident highlights a concerning trend; dragging deaths have been sporadically reported on the extensive subway system, the largest of its kind in the nation.

For instance, in 2022, a similar tragedy unfolded when a 20-year-old commuter lost his life after either his backpack or clothing became entangled in the train doors at the Columbus Circle station in upper Manhattan. Such occurrences, while not frequent, underline the importance of safety measures and awareness as commuters navigate the busy subway environment.

The investigation into Boahene’s death remains ongoing, with authorities aiming to gather all pertinent information to prevent future incidents of this nature. The interplay between safety protocols, commuter behavior, and technology is vital in ensuring the safety of all passengers in the bustling city’s transit system.
