A crash in Richmond Hill on Thursday afternoon resulted in injuries to four pedestrians, including two children under the age of 10. The incident took place at the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Newkirk Road at approximately 3:15 p.m.

According to York Regional Police, one woman sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a trauma center for urgent medical attention. Another woman and the two children, aged 7 and 1, were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and have since been discharged.

Insp. Rich Gaudet provided further details regarding the injured adult female, noting that she was wearing a reflective vest at the time of the incident. However, police are still working to clarify whether she was serving in her capacity as a crossing guard during the accident. "We have not been able to confirm that yet," Gaudet stated. "Based on our observations and the statements we’ve received from witnesses, we have contacted the Ministry of Labour to attend and determine if she was actually here in her capacity as a crossing guard."

The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene after the incident. As the investigation continues, police have stated that it is too early to determine if the dwindling light conditions contributed to the crash.

"It was essentially the vehicle that hit the four pedestrians, but as to why that vehicle hit the four pedestrians, that’s going to form part of our investigation," Gaudet remarked, highlighting the complexity of determining the causative factors behind the accident.

The ongoing investigation aims to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the crash, including witness statements and physical evidence from the scene. The significant injuries sustained by one of the pedestrians, along with the presence of young children, underscores the serious nature of the incident and the importance of pedestrian safety in that area.

In light of this event, local authorities may review road safety protocols and pedestrian protection measures at intersections to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Observations related to crosswalks, traffic patterns, and driver awareness are likely to be analyzed as part of the law enforcement efforts moving forward.

As investigations proceed, the community remains concerned for the well-being of those injured and is hopeful for their swift recovery.
