LAS VEGAS (AP) – Khaby Lame, the world's most popular TikTok personality with millions of followers, has recently departed the United States after being detained by immigration agents in Las Vegas for allegedly overstaying his visa. Lame, whose legal name is Seringe Khabane Lame, was taken into custody on Friday at Harry Reid International Airport. Fortunately for him, he was permitted to leave the country without receiving a deportation order, as confirmed by a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The 25-year-old influencer arrived in the U.S. on April 30, 2023, and reportedly overstayed the terms of his visa. The ICE spokesperson mentioned his situation, and inquiries were made by the Associated Press regarding Lame's comments on the issue through his Instagram account; however, he has not publicly addressed his detainment.
Lame's detainment and subsequent voluntary departure from the U.S. occur amid a broader enforcement of immigration policies under President Donald Trump's administration. The measures have included various actions such as raids in Los Angeles, which have led to significant public protests against ICE. During this period, the Trump administration has been exploring the limits of its executive authority related to immigration enforcement.
Receiving a voluntary departure, a status granted to Lame, allows individuals facing potential removal from the U.S. to avoid having a formal deportation order recorded against them. This is crucial as a deportation order could hinder their ability to return to the U.S. for up to ten years, a significant concern for many migrants and visitors.
Khaby Lame gained international fame during the COVID-19 pandemic by producing videos that humorously react to overly complicated "life hacks," all while remaining silent. This unique style has garnered him an impressive following of over 162 million users on TikTok alone. Originally from Senegal, Lame moved to Italy as an infant with his working-class parents and possesses Italian citizenship.
His rise to internet stardom has rapidly escalated; in 2022, he signed a multi-year partnership with the prominent designer brand Hugo Boss. Furthermore, in January 2023, he was appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, highlighting his growing influence beyond social media. In a notable appearance, Lame was seen attending the Met Gala in New York City last month, just days before his detainment, underscoring his prominence in the public eye.
Despite the challenges posed by his immigration status and the recent detainment, Lame's contributions to digital content and his position as a UNICEF ambassador underscore his impact beyond the realm of social media. His journey reflects the complexities that influencers may face regarding travel, legal documentation, and their roles in advocacy.
