WASHINGTON (AP) - The World Pride parade in the nation's capital saw a transformation from dreary weather to vibrant festivities as tens of thousands gathered to celebrate on Saturday. This year's event took on heightened significance, as many participants defied what activists described as an unprecedented assault on the rights of the LGBTQ+ community amid a challenging political climate.
The parade kicked off with an impressive display as a rainbow flag, measuring the length of three football fields, was carried by 500 members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C. Following this colorful representation, others waved flags representing the transgender, asexual, and bisexual communities from atop a bus, creating an inclusive atmosphere of celebration and solidarity.
Notable figures such as singer-songwriter Reneé Rapp and actress Laverne Cox expressed their support and enthusiasm from various floats during the parade. Cox, known for her role in Netflix’s "Orange is the New Black," addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of community and support among individuals facing adversity. “Pride means us looking out for each other no matter what,” she declared, resonating with many present.
The turnout of international travelers, including groups from Iran, Namibia, Kenya, and Russia, added a global dimension to the event, despite some expressing concerns over safety and political hostility. Along the parade route, hundreds of attendees gathered at locations such as the National City Christian Church, where festive decorations and music created a welcoming environment. A child playing with bubbles while Whitney Houston’s "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" played underscored the joyous atmosphere.
Cheo White, a 33-year-old from Annapolis, Maryland, noted that the political landscape has galvanized greater unity and participation within the LGBTQ+ community in Washington, D.C. Many participants echoed White's sentiments, stating that Pride has historically served as a political tool and that its significance has magnified this year, particularly for transgender and nonbinary individuals. Nick Kerver, White's partner visiting from Toledo, Ohio, affirmed the importance of not only celebrating but also getting involved in local communities to promote unity.
David Begler, a 58-year-old gay man from Philadelphia, expressed disappointment that some international visitors felt unsafe yet recognized the necessity of holding World Pride in such politically charged times. “It’s the perfect time to have World Pride in D.C.,” remarked Begler, emphasizing the need to send messages of solidarity to the White House rather than division.
Stay DeRoux, who usually participates in D.C. Pride, extended her plans this year to a full weekend of activities with her wife. She expressed joy at being among like-minded individuals, highlighting that standing in solidarity is especially vital amid the hatred experienced by the LGBTQ+ community. The atmosphere during the parade was one of celebration, as the streets filled with floats, music, and impromptu gatherings, momentarily overshadowing threats or fear.
The event culminated in emotional moments as participants celebrated love in various forms, including a marriage ceremony performed on a float by Johnny Cervantes Jr. and his partner Freddie Lutz, who have been together for 28 years.
As the festivities continued, a rally and protest march were planned for Sunday, alongside a massive street party and concert covering multiple blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue. Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser proudly declared the city as the “best in the world” for hosting World Pride while participating in the celebrations with her daughter.
However, the day was not without incidents, as the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department reported two juvenile stabbings and a separate shooting near Dupont Circle, an area celebrating Pride. Although the police reported that the incidents were unrelated to the celebrations, they raised concerns among attendees. Despite these occurrences, revelers maintained their spirit as they continued to flock to local nightlife venues.
