Just over one week ago, a tragic crash on August 3 claimed the life of 35-year-old Andrew Cristillo, an event that has profoundly impacted his family, particularly his wife, Christina, and their three young daughters, Leah, Chloe, and Ella. Andrew’s younger brother, Jordan Cristillo, spoke publicly on behalf of the family, expressing a desire for justice and a commitment to provide for his nieces, who are now left without their father.
Jordan described Andrew as a remarkable person, stating, “I want him to be acknowledged as the hero that he is.” He emphasized Andrew’s character, remembering him as the funniest person he ever met, who pursued his passions wholeheartedly and was always willing to support others. “His heart bled for people who were in pain,” Jordan shared, remembering Andrew as the light of their family.

While the family is left with only memories, the emotional toll is compounded by the injuries suffered by Andrew’s daughters, all under the age of eight, and his wife, Christina, who is also battling breast cancer. Jordan described the difficult situation, noting, “Although my brother has been killed, we can’t process that because we are so focused on making sure the girls are okay.” He praised Christina’s strength, highlighting her relentless commitment to her daughters in the wake of this tragedy.
The accident occurred on Highway 48, between St. John Sideroad and Ballantrae Commons, at around 9:30 p.m. Reports indicate that the driver of the second vehicle involved fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after. Jordan voiced his disbelief, stating, “How can you flee when you hear three little girls crying for help?”
The accused, Jaiwin Kirubananthan, an 18-year-old from Oshawa, faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving causing death, three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and failing to remain at the scene. Furthermore, it has been revealed that Kirubananthan was involved in another dangerous driving incident earlier in the year, raising concerns about his driving history.
In response to the incident, provincial police have reiterated their commitment to enhancing road safety through targeted blitzes aimed at tackling impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving. OPP Constable Taylor Konkle emphasized the importance of safe driving, especially during weekends when families are traveling.
Jordan expressed his frustration, declaring that “this wasn’t an accident,” but rather “complete and utter negligence and recklessness.” He underscored the need for justice to prevent other families from experiencing similar heartbreak. The Ministry of Transportation extended their condolences to the Cristillo family and pointed to new legislation aimed at improving road safety and reducing reckless driving.
In their effort to cope with this devastating loss, the Cristillo family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with the long-term care and recovery of the young children, a necessary step as they navigate this painful chapter of their lives. Jordan believes that Andrew’s actions in the crash may have played a crucial role in saving the lives of those he loved, stating, “I believe that my brother is the reason why those three girls and Christina are able to live to see another day, it’s because he saved them.”
