On a recent day in North York, a significant chemical incident unfolded at an apartment building located at 78 Harrison Garden Boulevard. The incident was triggered by a worker who accidentally mixed two chemicals in the pool area, resulting in the release of a harmful gas into the environment. This unforeseen event prompted immediate action from emergency services and fire officials.
According to Toronto Fire Services District Chief Brian McAlinden, the situation escalated beyond the pool area, necessitating rapid safety measures. Fire officials decided to implement a shelter-in-place order for personnel present in the building. In addition, they evacuated the lobby area and upgraded the emergency alarm level. This included calling in paramedics and police to assist in the response to the chemical leak.
The prompt response from the fire services led to the evacuation of approximately 30 people from the affected building. Remaining residents were instructed to stay inside their units while firefighters worked diligently to ventilate the areas impacted by the chemical release. The situation required careful management to ensure the safety of all residents and minimize further exposure to the gas.
In an effort to provide safe shelter for those evacuated, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) deployed buses to the scene. These buses served as a temporary refuge for the individuals who had to leave the apartment building due to the hazardous conditions. Firefighters executed their ventilation plans effectively, and after around two hours, the air quality levels in the building returned to normal.
Throughout the incident, paramedics remained on-site to assess the health and well-being of those affected. A total of 13 individuals received evaluations from paramedics at the scene. Ultimately, eight of these individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for further observation. Fortunately, all reported injuries were classified as minor, alleviating concerns regarding the overall impact of the chemical exposure on the evacuated residents.
