The FBI revealed on Tuesday that explosive residue was discovered in a Pennsylvania storage unit during an investigation involving two men, Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, who are charged with bringing homemade bombs to a protest outside Gracie Mansion, the residence of New York City's mayor. This incident took place on March 7, 2026, during a small anti-Muslim rally organized by far-right activist Jake Lang.

According to law enforcement officials and a criminal complaint, both Balat and Kayumi stated after their arrests that they were inspired by the Islamic State group. They reside in the suburbs of Philadelphia and drove to New York City to execute what they had planned as a violent attack. In police interviews, Balat expressed a desire to achieve something "even bigger" than the Boston Marathon bombing, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals.

Following the arrests, FBI bomb technicians performed controlled detonations of the explosive materials found at a public storage facility in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, a location near Balat's family residence. The Middletown Township Police Department reported that the explosion produced "several loud bangs," but confirmed that there was no threat to local residents. The FBI has executed multiple searches as part of this ongoing investigation.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt condemned the planned attack as "absolutely despicable," assuring that investigators and prosecutors are committed to bringing those responsible to justice. However, much about Balat and Kayumi's motivations, planning, and their relationship remains unclear.

Emir Balat is noted to be a senior at Neshaminy High School in Langhorne. A spokesperson for the school indicated that he had switched to a virtual program in September 2026, suggesting he had not attended in-person classes since then. Balat's attorney mentioned that he is facing "complicated stuff" in his personal life, although no further details were provided. Additionally, it was noted that Balat and Kayumi may not have known each other for an extended period.

Ibrahim Kayumi, hailing from Newtown, is just a few miles away from Langhorne. He graduated in 2024 from Council Rock High School North. According to his attorney, there was no comment following a court hearing, and no public statements were made regarding Kayumi's situation. Records indicate that Kayumi's family has operated several Popeyes fast food outlets in locations including Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Atlantic City. His mother had reported him missing on the day of the protest, noting he had not been seen since that morning.

When they arrived at the protest, Balat and Kayumi joined other counterprotesters opposing the anti-Muslim rally. The rally was organized by Jake Lang, a Christian nationalist who protests against New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the first Muslim elected to that office. During the event, journalists captured Balat throwing a device with a lit fuse that was later identified as containing the explosive TATP, along with nuts and bolts. The object extinguished without causing any injuries. Balat subsequently dropped a second explosive device near police officers and attempted to flee but was apprehended by law enforcement.

Balat and Kayumi are currently being held without bail after their court appearance, facing serious charges, including attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and using a weapon of mass destruction. They have not been required to enter a plea at this stage of the proceedings. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized that there are no links between the attack and the ongoing conflict in Iran, although the city remains on high alert following the events.

Later on March 10, 2026, a nearby park was evacuated, and several streets were closed due to reports of a "suspicious device." This object was later deemed nonthreatening. At the time of the investigation, New York Mayor Mamdani was not at home, and Gracie Mansion was not evacuated.
