The Toronto Humane Society (THS) has announced the opening of a new facility to enhance access to essential veterinary services, located just steps away from their existing River Street location. The Community Animal Health Centre, situated at 632 Queen Street East, officially opened its doors on April 8, 2026. THS aims to shift the focus towards wellness and preventive care to address the significant gaps in veterinary services across Toronto.

According to a recent press release from THS, it is estimated that between 40,000 to 50,000 pet owners of cats and dogs in Toronto lack a consistent relationship with a veterinarian. This reflects the systemic barriers faced in accessing animal care, which may include factors such as availability, cost, and geographical location. As a direct response to these challenges, the new Community Animal Health Centre has been designed to bridge these gaps by providing affordable veterinary care.

To make essential services more accessible, the pricing at the new centre is approximately 50 percent lower than the prevailing market rates. THS estimates that the centre will provide between $1.5 to $2 million annually in veterinary services charged at below-market rates. Phil Nichols, the CEO of THS, emphasized the initiative's mission, stating, “By offering below-market-rate services focused on wellness, we can help reduce barriers to care and support more consistent, proactive veterinary engagement across the community.”

The range of services available at the Community Animal Health Centre includes wellness exams, vaccinations, diagnostics, parasite prevention, and microchipping. These services are geared towards not only treating animals but also ensuring their long-term health and wellbeing. THS commented on the significance of this initiative, stating, “Improving access to veterinary care helps prevent crises before they happen, supports responsible guardianship, and strengthens the human-animal bond.”

The new facility is part of a broader plan, with several community-based centres expected to be developed over the next five years. This expansion aligns with THS’s strategic approach to create a network of accessible veterinary services throughout Toronto. The aim is to deliver care precisely where and when it is most needed, ultimately enhancing the overall health of community pets.

Loralee Dorst, the THS Director of Community Animal Welfare, reinforced the importance of preventive care, stating, “Preventive care is one of the most effective ways to improve animal health outcomes and reduce pressure on emergency and shelter systems. This model allows us to deliver timely, appropriate care while making services more accessible to those who need them.”

The introduction of the Community Animal Health Centre is a crucial step towards ensuring that all pet owners in Toronto can access the veterinary care their animals need, promoting healthier pets and a stronger community bond between guardians and their animals.
