Rosedale Residents Boost Security Amid Rising Crime

Rosedale, known for its affluence, has recently emerged as a notable target for criminal activities, inciting increased concern among its residents. Reports indicate a disturbing rise in break-ins and vehicle thefts, prompting the community to enhance their security measures collaboratively. The South Rosedale Residents’ Association, led by president Janice Lo, reveals that while private security has existed in this upscale neighborhood, a growing number of residents are now participating in a collective effort to fund regular security patrols.

Lo highlights that the spike in violent home invasions has alarmed the residents, motivating them to take proactive steps to safeguard their properties. The cost for each household to engage in the organized security effort ranges between $170 and $200 monthly. She emphasizes the importance of community involvement, stating, “As more engagement increases in the community, households can decide if they want to opt in." This initiative underlines a notable shift in the approach to neighborhood security.

According to data from the Toronto Police, there were 55 reported break-and-enters in the Rosedale-Moore Park area in 2024. This figure escalated to 70 incidents in 2025, reflecting an alarming increase of over 27 percent in property crimes. Blake Acton, a former police officer who has resided in Rosedale for nearly two decades, shares his experiences with crime in the area. Although his home has remained untouched, he has unfortunately fallen victim to vehicle theft on three occasions, with his vehicle being stolen directly from his driveway. Despite these incidents, he expresses a level of comfort about home invasions, attributing his peace of mind to his Great Dane and the vigilant nature of his neighbors.

Lo mentions that the Toronto Police are aware of the growing concerns within the community. In response, they have initiated several projects in Rosedale and other neighborhoods over recent months. A spokesperson from Toronto Police commented on their crime-solving approach, which focuses on collaboration with residents through prevention strategies, targeted enforcement, and continuous investigations. They also offer a program called Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, which allows officers to evaluate and suggest modifications to residents’ homes to deter potential criminal activity.

In light of the rising crime rates, the residents’ association is optimistic that if a greater number of households participate in the security initiative, they could ultimately achieve 24/7 private security coverage in Rosedale. This proactive move reflects the community’s commitment to enhancing safety and well-being amid increasing concerns about criminal activity in the area.
