LUCKNOW, India (AP) – A tragic incident occurred on Friday when an overcrowded tourist boat capsized in the Yamuna river in northern India, resulting in the death of at least 10 people. The accident took place near Vrindavan, a significant Hindu pilgrimage town located in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
According to officials, the privately operated boat had a maximum capacity of approximately 15 passengers but was carrying around 25 individuals at the time of the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest that strong winds may have contributed to the vessel swaying before it collided with a pontoon bridge and ultimately capsized.
Chandraprakash Singh, a senior administrative officer, reported that 15 people were rescued from the water, with four of them in critical condition. The deceased victims were all Indian nationals and included six women, as reported by local authorities.
In the aftermath of the accident, officials noted that most of the passengers were not wearing life jackets and raised concerns about the boat's maintenance and safety standards. Eyewitnesses claimed that the boat's operator fled the scene immediately following the capsizing, leaving many unanswered questions regarding accountability and safety measures.
The group aboard the boat was part of a larger cohort of about 150 tourists visiting the Vrindavan area, which is known for its religious significance and attracts numerous pilgrims throughout the year. Unfortunately, boating accidents are all too common in India, where many vessels operate under overcrowded conditions and often lack adequate safety equipment.
This incident is not isolated; in 2023, another tourist boat capsized in southern India, leading to the deaths of at least 22 people, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety regulations and enforcement in the tourism sector.
The tragic capsizing of the boat in the Yamuna river serves as a somber reminder of the importance of ensuring safety standards in water transport, particularly in regions that experience high volumes of tourist traffic. As investigations continue and rescue efforts are conducted, the focus will inevitably shift towards preventing such incidents in the future and holding accountable those responsible for prioritizing profit over safety.
