GJOA HAVEN – Canada's Emergency Management Minister, Eleanor Olszewski, has approved a request from the Nunavut government to urgently deploy the Canadian Rangers to the Hamlet of Gjoa Haven. This assistance aims to help distribute drinking water amid extremely cold conditions, with temperatures on Saturday recorded at around -25°C.

In her statement, Olszewski highlighted that Canadian Army Reserve members would also provide logistical support in Gjoa Haven, located on King William Island. The local energy provider has reported that the community has been experiencing power outages for several days, further complicating the situation.

The pressing circumstances have threatened Gjoa Haven's water system, prompting the declaration of a local state of emergency. Olszewski confirmed that the Government Operations Centre within Public Safety Canada is collaborating with the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces to ensure residents receive the necessary support and resources during this crisis.

The Qulliq Energy Corporation, in a social media update on Wednesday, indicated that workers faced difficulties restoring power in Gjoa Haven due to high winds. Despite later restoring service, ongoing issues persisted, and a crew was unable to land in the community because of poor weather conditions until Saturday. Fortunately, a post from Qulliq on Saturday afternoon confirmed that power had been restored to all customers in the area.

Olszewski reassured the public, stating, “We remain in close contact with the Government of Nunavut and will continue working closely with the territory to respond to the community’s needs.” This statement underscores the government's commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the residents of Gjoa Haven.

The Canadian Rangers, integral to the Canadian Army Reserve, are typically deployed in remote, isolated, and coastal regions of Canada. They provide light-equipped, self-sufficient forces to support national security and public safety operations across the country. Their deployment in Gjoa Haven illustrates the government's proactive approach in addressing emergencies in Canada's northern communities.

Officials from the hamlet and the Government of Nunavut were unavailable for immediate comment, reflecting the urgency of the situation as they respond to the community’s needs. This report emphasizes the importance of rapid government response and support in maintaining critical services, particularly amidst severe weather conditions.
