On May 4, 2026, an incident involving gunfire erupted near the Washington Monument, leading to a significant response from law enforcement, including the U.S. Secret Service. The event unfolded around 3:30 p.m. when plainclothes agents spotted a man carrying a firearm near the White House complex. The agents observed the imprint of a weapon on the suspect and began to follow him, subsequently alerting uniformed officers.
As uniformed Secret Service officers approached the suspect, he attempted to flee and opened fire on them. In response to the threat, the officers returned fire, resulting in the alleged gunman being injured. He was promptly transported to a local hospital; however, details regarding his medical condition have not been released.
Furthermore, during this chaotic situation, a minor was reportedly shot but is not believed to have sustained serious injuries. Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn mentioned that while it is not definitively known if the bystander was struck by the suspect's gunfire, investigators suspect that he was indeed hit during the incident.
The Washington, D.C. police are currently leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. In light of the situation, the Secret Service advised the public to avoid the area as emergency personnel responded to the scene. This response was critical due to the location of the incident, which took place in close proximity to the White House, where President Donald Trump was conducting a small business event at the time.
Due to the unfolding incident, the White House was briefly placed on lockdown. Journalists present outside were ushered into the briefing room while President Trump continued his event without interruption. This heightened security presence comes less than two weeks following an alarming incident in which a gunman attempted to storm the White House Correspondents' Association dinner armed with firearms and knives. The suspect in that case, Cole Tomas Allen, has been charged, and a Secret Service officer was shot during that incident but fortunately was not seriously injured as he was wearing body armor.
In a press briefing, Deputy Director Quinn stated that it remains uncertain if the shooting incident on May 4 was related to President Trump specifically. He emphasized that the investigation would aim to clarify whether the actions of the suspect were directed toward the president or if they were unrelated. Quinn refrained from speculating on the motivations behind the attack, stating, "I’m not going to guess on that. Whether it was directed to the president or not, I don’t know, but we will find out."
The incident has elicited a robust law enforcement response and has raised concerns, particularly given the recent history of threats to the White House and its occupants. As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant in maintaining security in the vicinity of the White House complex.
