A bystander was seriously injured by gunfire during a shooting incident that took place outside the White House on Saturday evening. The shooting occurred when 21-year-old Nasire Best opened fire towards a security checkpoint before being shot by U.S. Secret Service officers. The unidentified bystander, who was reported to be in serious but stable condition, suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The exact circumstances of how the bystander was shot remain unclear.
Little information has been provided by authorities regarding the details of the incident. According to the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department, after Best began shooting, Secret Service officers returned fire, resulting in his death shortly after at a local hospital. Thankfully, no officers were injured during the confrontation. Secret Service Director Sean Curran emphasized the organization's concern for the bystander, expressing hope for his full recovery in a social media statement.
At the time of this violent encounter, President Donald Trump was present in the White House. This incident marks the third shooting near the president in a span of just one month. Earlier in April, a man armed with guns and knives stormed the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. Additionally, earlier this month, Secret Service officers shot and injured a gunman who fired at them near the Washington Monument.
In response to the shooting, Trump posted on Truth Social, suggesting that the suspect had a possible obsession with the White House, labeling it as the nation's "most cherished structure." He connected the incident to his push for a new ballroom to be built on the site of the former East Wing of the White House, arguing that such a construction would be vital for ensuring the safety and security of future presidents. Trump has requested $1 billion from Congress for security enhancements around the White House campus, including the proposed ballroom.
Best had a prior record involving a previous encounter with law enforcement near the White House. Court documents indicate that he was arrested in July for attempting to breach White House grounds. At that time, he reportedly failed to comply with officers’ commands to stop, claimed to be Jesus Christ, and expressed a desire to be arrested. Best graduated from Dundalk High School in 2023 and was known to be a track and field athlete.
A woman who identified herself as Best's mother expressed her disbelief after learning about the incident through social media. She stated that her son was never violent and wished to clarify any misconceptions arising from the information being circulated.
The incident highlights the growing concern regarding security near the White House, particularly in light of recent violent events in the vicinity. The U.S. Secret Service continues to evaluate and respond to security threats involving the president, notably emphasizing their commitment to protecting not only the president but also bystanders caught in such violent incidents.
