In a recent development, American authorities have sentenced Ramanan Pathmanathan, a 40-year-old man from Toronto, to 33 years in prison for his involvement in a widespread "sextortion scheme" that targeted over 100 children across the United States. This severe sentence comes after Pathmanathan pleaded guilty in January 2023 to two serious charges: production of child pornography and coercion and enticement of a minor.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced that Pathmanathan's new prison term will commence only after he finishes serving a 12-year sentence in Canada. He received this sentence for similar crimes after pleading guilty to those offenses in the fall of 2022. Following the completion of his U.S. sentence, Pathmanathan will be subjected to 10 years of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender.
According to court documents, Pathmanathan utilized various social media platforms, primarily Instagram and Facebook Messenger, to make contact with at least 145 victims, including boys and girls as young as six years old. During these interactions, he coerced them into participating in sexually explicit activities on video. The nature of his demands was alarmingly disturbing, which included exposing their genitals and even engaging in sexual acts involving dogs, siblings, and other relatives.
The situation escalated as Pathmanathan recorded the actions of these children and saved the clips on his computer. When children attempted to cease their communication with him or blocked his accounts, he threatened to send the recorded images to their friends and families, further instilling fear in his victims and reinforcing his manipulative control over them.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro commented on the severity of the crimes committed by Pathmanathan, highlighting the extensive period he spent targeting children online. She stated, "This defendant spent years methodically hunting children online. He targeted more than 145 victims, some as young as six, and subjected them to horrors no child should ever experience." Pirro emphasized the commitment of the United States to ensure that international borders do not provide a safety net for individuals who exploit children.
This case has underscored the serious issue of online child exploitation and the need for international cooperation in addressing it. The partnership between U.S. and Canadian authorities has played a vital role in bringing Pathmanathan to justice, showcasing the importance of collaboration in tackling such heinous crimes that cross national boundaries.
