A tragic incident unfolded in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday when a police officer was killed and another was injured during a gunfight that occurred after a domestic dispute call. The police chief, W.H. "Skip" Holbrook, announced the developments at a news conference held in the capital city.

The deceased officer, identified as 29-year-old Christopher DeLong, had served on the police force for two years. He leaves behind a wife and two young children. Chief Holbrook expressed his sorrow, stating, "Our hearts are broken this evening," and appeared visibly affected during the press briefing.

In a heartfelt social media post, DeLong's wife described her husband as the "best dad to our babies" and expressed that she was "living a nightmare." The shooting incident began around 9:30 a.m. when a woman called the police, reporting that a man whom she had a restraining order against was destroying property at her home. Upon arriving at the scene, DeLong discovered that the suspect had already left the premises. The woman then provided DeLong with a description of the suspect and his vehicle.

Shortly after, around 10:30 a.m., Officer DeLong initiated a call reporting a suspicious person after observing an individual near a vehicle that matched the description given by the woman. Officer Dymock arrived shortly thereafter to provide backup support. Tragically, just minutes later, he radioed in that officers "were hit and a suspect was down," indicating that a gunfight had erupted.

The suspect has been identified as Adam Tyler Dowdy, a 33-year-old man with an extensive criminal history spanning at least four states. His previous arrests included charges of disorderly conduct, contempt of court, public intoxication, possession of a controlled substance, and probation violations, according to Chief Holbrook.

As a result of the shooting incident, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been tasked with investigating the events that transpired. A spokesperson from the agency has confirmed that the investigation is currently ongoing, further emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
