SEATTLE — A grand jury in Washington state has indicted 30-year-old James Bryant, an alleged co-conspirator in the tragic mass shooting that occurred in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The indictment officially charges Bryant with conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country, thereby establishing probable cause for prosecutors to advance the case against her.

According to Emily Langlie, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, the issuance of the indictment eliminates the need for a preliminary hearing that was originally scheduled for October 20. This move underscores the seriousness of the charges that Bryant faces in connection with the shooting incident.

Bryant, who resides in Bellingham, Washington, has been denied bail ahead of the indictment announcement. Her lawyer, identified as "Melody," uses female pronouns, indicating that Bryant identifies as a woman. The details surrounding the case highlight the gravity of the conspiracy charges, as the U.S. Department of Justice released a statement detailing several overt acts that Bryant allegedly took to further the conspiracy related to the Tumbler Ridge school shooting.

The tragic shooting, which took place in February, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, including five pupils and a teacher at the secondary school. The shooter, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, committed suicide at the scene as law enforcement was closing in on her. In the indictment against Bryant, prosecutors assert that she consented to record the shooting and livestream it over the internet. Furthermore, Bryant reportedly provided the shooter with advice on selecting targets and weaponry, as well as sending funds to purchase a lighter intended for use in an improvised explosive device.

The U.S. Justice Department's announcement emphasized the severe nature of the charges filed against Bryant. Conspiracy to murder in a foreign country carries a potential sentence of life in prison, reflecting the seriousness with which the legal system is treating this case. It is important to note that the allegations against Bryant remain unproven at this time, pending ongoing legal proceedings.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg is leading the prosecution in the case, with support from the National Security Division of the Justice Department. As the case evolves, it continues to capture public attention due to its chilling nature and the implications of premeditated violence in a school setting.
