Canada's hopes for a Stanley Cup in 2026 came crashing down during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final, where the Carolina Hurricanes faced off against the Montreal Canadiens. The Hurricanes decisively defeated the Canadiens 5-1, securing their place in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since their last victory in 2006.

Before Game 5, the Hurricanes had an unusual competitive advantage, having only played 12 games since April 18. They had swept their opening two playoff rounds, contrasting starkly with the Canadiens, who had played 18 games since April 19, including two grueling Game 7 matchups. While Montreal managed to take an early lead by winning Game 1, the Hurricanes quickly regained momentum and dominated the series, winning four consecutive games, including controlling the shots against the Canadiens in Games 2, 3, and 4.

In Game 5, it was clear that the combination of Taylor Hall and Logan Stankoven posed significant problems for the Canadiens. The duo each contributed one goal and two assists, with Hall netting the game-winning goal just before the halfway point of the first period. The performance of both players was instrumental in leading the Hurricanes to victory, allowing them to claim the Prince of Wales Trophy as Eastern Conference champions.

The scoring began for the Hurricanes in the first period, marking the fifth consecutive game they opened the scoring in the series. Logan Stankoven made a determined effort toward the net, which led to Taylor Hall capitalizing on a rebound, pushing the score to 1-0. Head coach Martin St. Louis of the Canadiens challenged the play due to potential contact with goaltender Jakub Dobeš, but after video review, the goal was upheld.

Carolina extended their lead to 2-0 at the 15:12 mark when Stankoven, left unmarked, received a pass from behind the net and successfully executed a shot into the top corner of the net. Just a minute and forty seconds later, Eric Robinson scored the Hurricanes' third goal, tucking the puck between Dobeš's legs after a well-placed pass from William Carrier.

The fourth goal came as the Hurricanes capitalized on a bad line change from the Canadiens. Hall rushed into the zone, taking a shot that was initially saved by Dobeš; however, Jackson Blake reacted quickly to net the rebound, making it 4-0. Carolina's fifth goal came when Nikolaj Ehlers delivered a pass to Seth Jarvis, whose subsequent pass through the crease found Shayne Gostisbehere, who scored with precision.

Although the Canadiens struggled to find their rhythm, Cole Caufield broke Frederik Andersen's shutout streak, which had lasted an impressive 160 minutes and 16 seconds. Caufield found himself in prime position in front of the crease, shooting through Andersen's five-hole for a power-play goal, marking his sixth goal of the playoffs.

As the clock wound down, Seth Jarvis managed to score an empty-net goal with 3:21 remaining in regulation, bringing the final score to 6-1 in favor of the Hurricanes. In terms of goaltending, Dobeš recorded 23 saves on 28 shots, while Andersen had a strong showing, stopping 23 of 24 shots faced.

The outcome of this game solidified the Hurricanes' position in the Stanley Cup Final, setting the stage for a showdown against the Vegas Golden Knights as both teams look to secure their second championship in franchise history.
