The Toronto Blue Jays faced a challenging situation on Sunday, as outfielder Jesús Sánchez was forced to leave a game against the Baltimore Orioles due to an apparent right arm injury. The incident occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Blue Jays were trailing 6-0 at Camden Yards.
According to reports, Sánchez's injury was caused by a baseball thrown from the stands by a fan. Eyewitness accounts indicated that Sánchez was engaging with spectators when the errant throw struck his hand. He was seen speaking towards the crowd just before turning away, at which point the ball landed and hit him. Following the incident, Sánchez exited the game after managing one hit in two at-bats.
After the incident, an Orioles spokesperson issued a statement indicating that they had identified the fan responsible for the throw and had removed them from the ballpark to conduct a thorough investigation. According to Baltimore beat reporter Jacob Calvin Meyer, witnesses described the incident as accidental. It was noted that Sánchez appeared to be signaling to a young fan by holding up his glove, presumably to engage in a game of catch. However, once he turned around, the child threw the ball, leading to the injury.
Sánchez, who appeared to be in significant discomfort, was seen clutching his right hand as he left the field. Fortunately, the Blue Jays announced that precautionary X-rays administered after the game returned negative for any fractures, suggesting that the injury might not be as severe as initially feared.
Prior to the game on May 31, 2026, Sánchez was having a solid season, with a batting average of .285, an on-base percentage of .322, and a slugging percentage of .461. Over the course of 56 games, he had recorded 47 hits, driven in 28 runs (RBI), and hit six home runs. His performance has been an important part of the Blue Jays' campaign this year.
