VANCOUVER - Fans planning to attend the FIFA World Cup matches in 2026 will need to leave their vuvuzelas at home. This decision follows the widespread recognition of the plastic horns during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where they became a defining feature of the tournament. However, their incessant drone led to complaints from players, coaches, and broadcasters.
The prohibition of vuvuzelas is part of FIFA's comprehensive stadium code of conduct for the upcoming tournament, which will take place across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. This code outlines a detailed list of prohibited items and behaviors, aimed at ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees.
In addition to vuvuzelas, the rules bar the use of whistles, air horns, and any other loud noise-making devices. Furthermore, musical instruments that exceed 12 centimeters in any dimension require prior written approval from the event organizers. Notably, drones and reusable water bottles are also on the list of items that fans cannot bring into the venues.
The code of conduct also addresses behavioral restrictions to maintain decorum at the events. Fans will be explicitly prohibited from streaking, flashing, or revealing intimate body parts. The regulations clearly state that “body tattoos and body paint do not constitute clothing,” emphasizing the importance FIFA places on proper attire in the stadiums.
FIFA has stated that any spectators who violate these rules risk being denied entry or removed from the venue. Furthermore, ticket holders and accredited persons who fail to adhere to the regulations may have their tickets revoked, highlighting the importance of compliance with the newly established guidelines.
The 2026 World Cup will be an expanded tournament featuring 48 teams, with matches set to commence on June 11. Canada will launch its campaign the following day, June 12, by facing Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto. Following this match, the Canadian team will also compete against Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver during the group stage.
This announcement, alongside the details regarding the banned items and behaviors, demonstrates FIFA's commitment to providing a positive experience for fans throughout the tournament. With the regulations firmly in place, organizers aim to foster an environment that enhances the enjoyment of this significant sporting event, leaving behind some of the controversies seen in past tournaments.
