NEW YORK (AP) — On Sunday evening, a stabbing incident at New York's Penn Station resulted in injuries to six individuals, according to authorities. The event occurred less than a day before a significant sporting event, as thousands of fans were anticipated to gather at Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
The attack took place around 7 p.m. in Penn Station, one of the busiest transportation hubs in the USA. This extensive rail complex located beneath Madison Square Garden serves multiple transit systems, including Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit, and New York City subway lines, accommodating hundreds of thousands of commuters and travelers daily.
Paramedics arrived on the scene to find one victim suffering from serious injuries, along with two others sustaining moderate injuries and two with minor injuries. All five of these individuals were transported to Bellevue Hospital for medical attention. Additionally, another person, whose condition remains unclear, was taken to a different hospital.
At this time, authorities have not disclosed specific details regarding the circumstances leading to the stabbing or whether the victims were targeted. By late Sunday, the chaotic scene had subsided, reverting to the typical hustle and bustle of Penn Station. Travelers continued to move through the area, navigating past a section cordoned off near Tracks 5 and 6, which bore visible signs of the earlier incident, such as medical gloves, discarded bandages, and stains on the floor.
This violent occurrence coincided with the buildup to one of New York City's most significant sports events in decades. The matchup scheduled for Monday night features the New York Knicks facing off against the San Antonio Spurs — marking the first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden since 1999. This game is expected to attract massive crowds to the arena.
Adding to the significance of the event, former President Donald Trump announced his intention to attend the nationally televised game. This news heralded extensive security measures organized by the Secret Service, the New York Police Department, and other agencies responsible for ensuring safety around Madison Square Garden and its vicinity. As of now, authorities have not confirmed whether the stabbing incident will influence the security arrangements for the game on Monday night.
Amtrak police are actively investigating the stabbing and have already taken a suspect into custody. However, no information about the suspect's identity or potential charges has been disclosed at this time.
As the investigation continues, both the public and officials remain on alert, especially with the approaching high-profile NBA Finals event that is set to draw significant attention and large crowds. The situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety in major urban transportation hubs, particularly during high-traffic events.
